Social Theory & Applied Research Program
Working Professionals
Working Professionals and Volunteers who wish to take some time off work to participate in STAR programs can do so without necessarily enrolling in an Academic Program seminars.  We offer challenging community based projects in Africa for working groups or individuals who have limited time off work and are endowed with certain professional skills or knowledge and wish to share.  Participants will work of project with a local Project adviser who oversees the such short stay projects.
Please contact the Project_Coordinator@star-program.org to discuss your area of interest for arrangements to be made before making plans for the trip to Africa.
Below is a sample recommended STAR program for working professionals (Duration: 3 weeks):

Intensive Orientation (1 day)

Upon arriving at the program destination, participants will be offered an orientation program that elaborates on health, safety, geography and cross-cultural adaptation skills. Basic essential key words of the local dialect will be taught to begin language communication skills that is needed to interact with people in host community to aid quicker achievement of academic objectives.

Cultural Immersion (Open)

For working professionals, have the option to choose to stay with families recommended by our local Program Coordinators.  Cultural Immersion will be integrated throughout your stay at the project destination and through your daily life activities.  Participants will be introduced to the daily life of the host communities, by living amongst the natives in both urban and rural dwellings to make friends, eat the local foods and learn the language and culture.

Team Building Activities (1 day)
Our Team Building programs actively engage participants, sparking creative energy, fostering innovation, and nostalgia.  The carefully designed adventures taps into the skills and talents of every team member by collaborating and competing in a series of mental and physical activities that range from elaborate problem-solving exercises to light-hearted contests.  We highlight problem-solving, innovation, shared leadership, communication, team planning and time management.

Field Research/Study
(1 day)

The STAR program like to working professionals to familiarize themselves with the problem at hand and understand the problem fully before attempting to work on them.  Quick fixes and drop in solutions do not work in Africa.  The challenges are huge and entangled in culture taboos and resource limitations. Together with a Program Facilitator the project will be discussed thoroughly in consultation with experts and government officials if necessary before actual project work begins.

Participants will be on a normal working schedule during the week working on their chosen projects.  You are at liberty to stay as long as you visa permits and you continue to work on your assigned project.
